The most important rule when packing for a trip is to pack lightly unless you have hired someone to carry your bags. Remember you will be moving your luggage in and out of the car trunk, through the airport, and off the luggage carousel.

Air travelers may now carry liquids, gels and aerosols in their carry-on bag when going through security checkpoints.

The following rules apply to all liquids, gels, and aerosols carried through security checkpoints:

1. All liquids, gels and aerosols must be in three ounce or smaller containers. Half filled larger containers and rolled up toothpaste tubes are not allowed. Each container must be three ounces or smaller.
2. All liquids, gels and aerosols must be placed in a single, quart-size, zip-top, clear plastic bag. Gallon size bags and bags that are not zip-top, such as fold-over sandwich bags, are not allowed. Each traveler can use only one, quart-size, zip-top, clear plastic bag.
3. Each traveler must remove their quart-sized plastic, zip-top bag from their carry-on and place it in a bin or on the conveyor belt for X-ray screening. X-raying separately will allow TSA security officers to more easily examine the declared items. There are exceptions for baby formula, breast milk, and other essential liquids, gels, and aerosols, including prescription and over-the-counter medicines.

Things almost impossible to do without.

Toiletries

Toothpaste & Toothbrush
Spare glasses or contact lenses
Makeup
Razor
Hair care accessories (brushes, comb, hair spray
Business/calling cards
Shampoo, lotions, cologne, and other necessities should be stored in a Zip Lock bag to prevent spillage.

Clothes

Bring extra plastic bags for soiled clothing.
Take enough underwear for one week, or for the length of the trip plus two days, whichever is shorter.
If you are traveling on business, you can probably take two suits and rotate between them. Try to take different colors of shirts/blouses; mixing and matching is always a good idea.
If you are going on an extended trip take a few garment colors that wear well together.
Even if you check the weather channel, be prepared for unusual weather like rain in a sunny climate.
Slippers are highly recommended when away from home.

Miscellaneous

If you are doing any kind of sight-seeing, take some sort of small backpack or fanny pack. You will want to carry maps and perhaps phrase books, guidebooks, water bottles, sunglasses, and so on.
A money belt is especially important for security purposes.
Your plane trip may be much more enjoyable with earplugs, a water bottle (with water!), chewing gum, and some food.
Aside from being noisy and prone to pressure changes, airplane cabins are very dry and tend to dehydrate the traveler over time. Chewing gum helps with depressurization, and airline food is, well, about as good as airline food.
Telephone # - In today's world everything is programmed in your cellular phone. Before you leave on your vacation, write important telephone numbers down and store your list in a safe place.
Passport - Even if you are traveling inside the country, it is a good idea to take your passport with you.
Passports can also be used as your identification in case your wallet gets lost or stolen. Keep your passport separate from your wallet for safe keeping.
Watch - Digital watches with an alarm, are inexpensive, small, light, and very useful.
